Your Worth Didn’t Expire While You Were Away, So Why Are You Over‑Functioning?

Dismantling the Trap of Over-Performance

Have you ever taken time off, only to return to work gripped by a strange, subconscious anxiety that you need to "prove your worth" all over again?

This triggers over-functioning, a state where we over-deliver, over-explain, and over-commit just to quiet our internal fear of being perceived as disengaged.

Over-functioning feels like productivity, but in reality, it is a fast track to physical and emotional exhaustion.

How Can You Stop Yourself From Over-Functioning?

Do a self-audit.

A over-functioning audit.

systematic self-check designed to identify where you are taking on anxiety, responsibilities, or emotional labour that belongs to other people or processes. It replaces panic-driven hustle with calm, sustainable delivery.

Why? Because, it can bring balance back and

  • Sustains Long-Term Performance: You cannot lead effectively if your fuel tank is constantly on empty.
  • Establishes Psychological Safety: When you stop over-functioning, you give yourself and your team room to step up, own their responsibilities, and grow.
  • Prevents Silent Burnout: Over-functioning leads to quiet resentment, a primary driver of professional detachment.

How to Audit Yourself?

I use these strategies to audit my self when I am over-functioning.

You can do it too!

Give it a try!

  • Map Your "Responsibility Footprint: List all the tasks you touched this week. Ask yourself for each one: "Was this explicitly my responsibility, or did I step in because I couldn't tolerate the temporary discomfort of someone else's delay?"
  • Replace Immediate "Yes" with a 24-Hour Buffer: When asked to take on a last-minute non-essential task, adopt this default response: "Let me review my current strategic deliverables and get back to you with my capacity tomorrow."
  • Normalize "Good Enough" for Low-Stakes Administrative Output: Not every slide deck requires 10 hours of design polish. Reserve your perfectionism strictly for high-impact, strategic milestones.

đź’ˇRecommended Tool: Use visual mapping tools like Miro or Whiteboard to map out your core deliverables versus secondary noise. Visually seeing your commitments helps draw firm boundaries around your personal energy. My personal favourite is Microsoft Planner.

Why the quest for perfection is leaving us all feeling exhausted?

Beyond the Juggle & Balance: Crafting a Life of Harmony, Not Hustle Have you ever found yourself sitting in front of your computer, trying to finish one last email, while your mind is already racing through the dinner plan, the unopened school notice, and that promise you made to call your parents? It feels like you’re a juggler, desperately trying to keep all the balls in the air, terrified that if just one drops, the whole act will come crashing down.  Let's step off that stage, put the juggling balls down, and talk about what true balance really looks like. It’s not about a flawless performance; it's about creating a life that feels harmonious, sustainable, and authentically yours. What is True Balance, Really? For years, we’ve been sold a picture of work-life balance that looks like a perfectly symmetrical scale, with "work" on one side and "life" on the other, each getting an equal, measured share. But our lives are not that simple or static. Let’s ...

Do you see Rejection  as Your Best Teacher ? or as a failure? Let me share my story with you if you see it as a failure. Ready..... Early in my career, I was tasked with summarizing 500 customer feedback surveys into a 1-page for the Executive Team.  This was long before AI.  I failed.  Again. And again.  My leader rejected my work 45 times .  On the 46th attempt, he finally smiled.  He told me "I wasn't testing your content; I was testing your patience." From  Visibility to Credibility , you must develop the resilience to advocate for what is right, even when the room says no . As a newly promoted leader or a professional, you might develop the psychological pressure that hits you the moment you are visible. You feel like you don't belong in the seat because  you might think  rejection or correction  is  failure . So, let's build the Credibility Muscle together with these actionable strategies: Practice "The 46t...
