Imagine sitting at a dinner party. Someone asks,
❓"So, what do you do?"
Do you answer with your soul's passion, or do you recite your corporate job title? For most, it's the latter. This is called "Job Enmeshment"- when your self-worth is so tangled with your career that the thought of losing your job feels like losing your existence. It’s time to diversify your identity portfolio.
Separate "Who You Are" From "How You Earn Money"
Identity Diversification is the psychological practice of separating who you are from how you earn money. Just as you wouldn't put 100% of your financial savings into a single volatile stock, you shouldn't invest 100% of your self-worth into a single meaning. It is the understanding that your job is something you do, not something you are.
BECAUSE.......
- It kills the fear: When you have multiple sources of meaning (a parent, a mentor, an artist, a community leader), the loss of one pillar (the job) doesn't collapse the entire structure of your life.
- It increases performance: Ironically, when you aren't terrified of being fired, you take bolder risks, speak more truth, and lead better. You move from "playing not to lose" to "playing to win."
- The "Relevance" Shift: This shifts your focus from holding onto a specific seat to maintaining your market relevance.
🛠Let's Decouple Your Ego from Your Employment. How? Follow these 3 strategies:
1. The "Pie Chart" Exercise: Draw a circle representing your life. Currently, your job might take up 80% of that pie. Consciously carve out slices for other roles: The Athlete, The Friend, The Learner. Visually seeing your "Self" as a multi-faceted entity reduces the weight of the "Employee" slice.
2. Rewrite Your Bio (The "Zero-Title" Challenge): Try to introduce yourself to three new people this month without using your job title or company name. Talk about the problems you solve or the value you bring. E.g., instead of "I'm a Project Manager at TechCorp," try "I help teams turn chaotic ideas into launched products."
