We have all been there. You receive a confusing email, your blood pressure spikes, and you hammer out a "efficient" reply. You hit send, feeling like a productivity warrior.
Then, you re-read it an hour later.
Oh no!
It doesn’t sound "efficient." It sounds like you’re screaming. Or worse, it sounds like the dreaded "Per my last email" passive-aggressive dagger.
In the absence of facial expressions and tone of voice, digital text is a minefield. We think we are being clear; the recipient thinks we are being cold. I used to rely on my sticky notes ("WAIT") to stop me from sending these, but sometimes you need a second opinion.
Since we can't carry a PR consultant in our pocket, it’s time to use the next best thing: AI is here to rescue!
So, what is the 'Vibe Check'?
This is about using tools like Grammarly’s Tone Detector or ChatGPT as a mirror. It’s an objective, unemotional third party that scans your text and says, "Hey, you sound a little intense right now. Are you sure about this?"
Think of it as a spell-checker, but for your personality. Why?
If you are the smartest person in the room but your emails make people want to quit, are you still winning?
Check Your Tone, Without Overthinking It!
Here are three ways to use tech to save yourself from yourself:
- The Grammarly "Emoji" Test: If you use Grammarly, pay attention to the little emoji it puts at the bottom of your text box. If you are aiming for "Friendly" but the emoji is "Assertive" or "Formal," stop. That emoji is predicting how your reader will feel. If the emoji looks angry, rewrite until it smiles.
- The "Sentiment Analysis" Pause: If you use Microsoft Outlook (Viva Insights), check the "Sentiment Analysis" feature. It can flag if your communication habits are trending negative over time. It’s like a Fitbit for your mood.
- The ChatGPT "Roast Me" Prompt: Before sending a difficult email, paste it into ChatGPT (or Gemini/Claude) try prompt in the image below. The AI will often catch nuances you missed because you were too busy being "right."
Technology often strips the humanity out of communication; use these tools to put it back in.
